The
first New Zealand Pizza Hut restaurant was opened in
New Lynn (Auckland) in September 1974. From 1974 to
1995 the Pizza Hut brand was licensed to an independent
franchisee where in January 1995 Tricon International
Restaurants, (the world's largest restaurant operator)
acquired the business. At this time Pizza Hut NZ$ had
36 stores. In May 1997, Restaurant Brands NZ$ acquired
the rights to hold the franchise for Pizza Hut in New
Zealand and in June of that year became a publicly listed
company on the NZ$ Stock Exchange. Restaurant Brands
are also the parent company behind KFC and Starbucks
in New Zealand. Being a franchise for Pizza Hut allows
Restaurant Brands to leverage "best practices" from
Tricon Restaurants International (the franchisor). Tricon
is the world's largest restaurant operator by store
numbers (they own Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell internationally),
therefore Pizza Hut NZ$ enjoys the advantages of this
ongoing relationship which include access to worldwide
marketing programmes, procurement initiatives, new product
developments, store design and development initiatives,
and store operating systems. As of October 1999 there
are 45 Pizza Hut stores and two joint KFC/Pizza Hut
stores throughout New Zealand.

Getting the Best Quality Pizza's to the Pizza Hut Customer
In
ensuring that Pizza Hut does deliver the best quality
pizzas to the New Zealand market, we have a dedicated
0800 Call Canter. This centralism facility is where
customer calls are received by trained staff and orders
are electronically sent to the store nearest the customer.
Pizza
Hut believes this system provides better customer service,
is a powerful marketing tool and is a significant competitive
advantage. The addition of on-line ordering through
our website (in late 1999) is seen as a complementary
addition to the system already in place, adding to the
customer base rather than merely encouraging our existing
customers to order on-line.
Pizza Hut also operates a programme to improve customer
service through regular customer surveys that measure
performance indicators, such as service, food quality
and value. Extensive use is made of these customer surveys
that score stores and reward staff by measuring key
attributes of cleanliness, hospitality, accuracy of
order, maintenance of facility, product quality and
speed of service.
The
result of both the market surveys and international
experience has created the Pizza Hut product and service
that is so popular today. The general public enjoy a
combination of traditional pizzas, side items and new
innovative products plus regular specials that ensure
that Pizza Hut has something on our menu to suit most
tastes.
