Myths About Diabetes

Age and sex make no difference to diabetes. Man or woman, young or old - all can fall a prey to it. However, the disease appears to prefer persons of middle age to youngsters. Perhaps, deterioration in digestive capacity during middle age is the reason for this. Since diabetes is a hereditary disease; even babies are likely to suffer from it. It can run in families from generation to generation. It has been proved that a child is sure to inherit the disease if both the parents are diabetic.

Diabetes is not caused by any bacteria/virus ; neither is it an infectious disease

Effects Of Diabetes
If the level of toxin in the blood increases, blood becomes more acidic and the patient starts vomiting often; the body suffers from loss of salt. The level of acetone and diastolic acids in urine increase. On the whole, the body itself becomes acidic. Water content in blood decreases and red blood corpuscles coagulate. The patient suffers from breathlessness. Blood pressure comes down. Blood circulation is impaired causing kidney failure. The body starts losing heat. If this condition goes beyond control, the patient is sure to die.

When the patient gets hurt, the wound does not heal quickly if sufficient blood does not circulate to the region of the wound. In extreme cases, the affected part has to be amputated. When the circulation of blood to any part of the body is obstructed, that part becomes gangrenous: (Gangrene is nothing but the stage when body cells die and the affected tissues of the body decompose). The toxins released in the gangrenous tissues spread throughout the body and the patient dies.

A diabetic should take great care to see that he does not contract any skin infections. The body should always be kept scrupulously clean and health of the skin maintained.

Wounds and ulcers on the body of the diabetic do not heal quickly. When the wounds do not heal, the disease itself may aggravate. Therefore the patient should always take extra precaution to avoid getting hurt. If, by chance, the patient does get hurt, self-medication should never be resorted to as it is highly dangerous to do so. The wound, even if it is a minor one, should be treated only by a qualified doctor. If the patient has been suffering from diabetes for a very long time, every care should be taken to see that the skin does not suffer any kind of injury because, even a slight scratch on the skin may grow into a big wound and become gangrenous, that is, the cells in the region die and the tissues decompose
